Oriental Medicine Program
Florida College of Integrative Medicine (FCIM) offers a unique program that integrates
the teaching of Oriental medicine with the teaching of Western medical sciences.
The purpose of this integration is to produce a knowledge base that is appropriate
for the practice of Oriental medicine in a society where Western healthcare
predominates. Without the basic understanding of Western medical sciences,
the practitioner of Oriental medicine cannot communicate intelligently with
other healthcare professionals, nor can the practitioner properly assess how
Oriental treatment may interact with Western treatment.
As more patients seek out alternative medical solutions for chronic
and life-threatening illnesses—relief from complementary cancer
treatment, muscular-skeletal injuries, arthritis, depression, chronic
pain, exhaustion, colds, and much more—they are finding results
in Oriental medicine. Patients are finding solutions that can be implemented
into their own lives and therapies, which are enhancing their healing
processes. Patients are finding medical treatments that assist with
physical and mental recovery, practices that address the balance of
mind, body and spirit. FCIM teaches both Eastern and Western philosophies,
and serves the Western medical community with advanced education in
integrative medicine to enhance the healing of their patients as well
as with preventive efforts and overall well being.
The Oriental medical courses are taught and the clinic supervised
by faculty members who are highly qualified, experienced and licensed
in Florida. Each brings outstanding Oriental medical training, practice,
and teaching experience in China to their classroom instruction. In
the clinic students have the opportunity to work under the masterful
guidance of these Chinese acupuncture physicians while treating patients
with the modalities of acupuncture, moxibustion, herbology, Tui-Na
(Chinese medical massage), nutritional counseling, and lifestyle counseling.
Florida College of Integrative Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation
Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the only accrediting
agency authorized to accredit in the areas of acupuncture and Oriental
medicine.
Florida College of Integrative Medicine is licensed by the Florida
Commission for Independent Education, License No. 2621. The College's
program also meets the requirements set forth by the Florida Board
of Acupuncture in Chapter 457 of the Florida Statutes for the education
and licensure of Acupuncture Physicians in Florida. This chapter defines
acupuncture as a form of primary health care based on traditional
and modern medical concepts and techniques.
Degree

Upon completion of our program, graduates receive both the Bachelors Degree of Professional Health Studies and the Masters Degree of Oriental Medicine. These degrees qualify the graduate to take the national board exam administered by the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) which then makes the graduate eligible to apply with the state for licensure. In the state of Florida, an Acupuncture Physician is a Primary Care Provider.
